Hello! my name is Pamela of Katurah's Papillons and once Australian Shepherds.
I am writing about some things that have been brought to my attention recently and in the past; plus, about my breeding
experiences that have made me very successful today.
WE all as dog producers have been through the trial and error of breeding great dogs; but, realistically most have not
studied nor done their home work with their pedigrees or breeding practices to correct or breed better dogs; and judges
just keep putting up the mediocre prospect because that is all they have to judge, at the time. One should be ashamed as
a breeder to be putting out this kind of quality in dogs. The list is way too long to name the health issues that have arrived
from these bad breeding practices. As a foundation breeder, I strive to do my very best to produce sound and solidly
structured dogs.
There are many new comers to the breed who think they know the correct breeding practices and have never done dogs in
the past but they know more than us foundation breeders and won't ask for our help. So one is stuck with the mediocure
qualityPleas in a family pet companion or a show prospect; which ever it may be due to the price. But, what one doesn't
realize is the veterinarian bills will climb and possibly death with their pet companion due to the health issues that crop up.
When breeders start down sizing these dogs to 3 to 4 pounds, in the size of a Chihuahua, we start loosing our structure
and movement not counting all the health issues that are created. Examples: congenitive heart failure, premature tooth
lose, bad patellas, open fontanels, eye disease, liver, and renal failure; just to name a few.
There is a lot that goes into breeding dogs and praying you get the correct gene out put without health issues and produce
a beautiful dog that will give one many years of happiness. God knows it has not been easy for the past 48 years to
produce nice dogs and to find the correct family home for them. There are a few breeders that will tell you they can decide
from an ultra sound picture will show them that a puppy is a show prospect; which one knows is not true or when they are a
day or week old they know that the puppies are show prospects. My question has been, "Did one put a leash on this
puppy and stack him/her on the table at this day or week old age?" Virtually impossible!
Many buyers always ask the question of what it entells to produce nice family pet companions or show/performance
prospects. I state that it is not about putting two dogs together to make nice dogs but the time, effort, understanding of
genetics, and financial costs are all involved in producing these dogs; pedigrees are only corner stones, provided they are
correct and one has done their homework in what dogs have produced. Then hoping the puppies all survive to mature into
adult hood and become happy and healthy family companions. Also, to hope the dam has enough milk, doesn't roll on
them, or need a c-section; which costs major money. I have been asked to why some puppies/dogs are priced so low
while others are priced a lot higher, this all plays a factor in the quality and pedigree. There is no free ride when
purchasing a nice family companion or show/performance prospect. One gets what they pay for. Please do your home
work and research on the breeder and breed of dog one would like to own; because, this is a long term commitment and
costs need to be factor in with vaccinations, spay/neuter, dental, food, housing, quality time, and etc... Make sure you get a
contract and the breeder has been producing nice structured/temperament/sound dogs for many years, has the
knowledge, understanding, and can answer ALL ones questions with honesty, integrity, and that they are not a puppy mill.
Also, the breeder knows 100% that the puppy is out of said female and sire; one can see both parents and they are healthy
and happy. If possible see the whole litter, provided they haven't been placed into their new homes yet; be able to see at
least two to three generations of the linage and this will give one an idea of what ones future family companion will look
like. Please keep in mind there is a lot of genetic factors that play a very important roll in the production of producing ones
foundation in producing sound and happy dogs!
There are questions that I will ask of one who is interersted in purchasing one of my puppies/dogs. Please email me
privately and we can discuss this then.
